Our Candidates

We happily represent a diverse roster of local and global job-seekers. Each of our candidates meets stringent requirements. These include:

  • Permission to work;
  • Fluent English;
  • A clean driving record;
  • 3-4 years of recent full-time experience in her/his respective field;
  • 3 excellent references, preferably long-term;
  • A successful in-person interview in our office. We meet most candidates at least twice.
  • A current CPR certificate and outsourced professional background check.

We embrace folks who are bright, reliable, punctual, presentable, educated, creative, literate, proactive and diligent. Common sense is a must. Our candidates stand out in a crowd — in a good way!


Our nannies and other child-caregivers are well-versed in the developmental, educational, nutritional, social and emotional needs of children. In general, we seek candidates who exhibit common sense, a proven track record, an awareness of safety & security protocols, apparent good health, a pro-active and positive attitude, calm, and, stability. We screen our childcare applicants for their true and passionate interest in childcare, and for their literacy, education, intellectual curiosity, empathy, kindness, punctuality, and well-roundedness.

Their experience, education, and references reflect a variety of age groups, from newborns to teens. The languages they speak include Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Russian, Mandarin, Tagalog, Hindi, and more. Many are experienced with dietary requirements/preferences such as food allergies, medically-restricted diets, organic/health cooking, vegetarian or vegan diets, and kosher law.

Some have teaching backgrounds and/or degrees in Early Childhood Education. A few have Montessori experience. Most swim and nannies will often travel with a family.

Nannies often have flexible skills and hold hybrid jobs such as nanny-household manager, nanny-housekeeper, nanny-family assistant, nanny-PA, nanny-cook, and nanny-tutor. We also represent governesses, FT & PT tutors, junior nannies, and travel nannies. We’ve been highly-touted “special needs experts” since our inception.

Housekeepers, Cooks & More

Housekeepers range from those who’ve worked in formal homes to expert day cleaners. Housekeeper and Household Managers may wear many hats; some function as housecleaners plus after-school nannies or caregivers for young children when not performing cleaning or cooking duties. Additional duties may include:

How do you find your candidates?

Hometown Nannies & Domestics has been in Westport, CT since 1990; prior to that, we were malibu mamas.

Some candidates have been with us for over 20 years, some are new and most are in the middle. Our registrants tend to come back to us once they are no longer needed on a job, in some instances because the children have grown up or the family has relocated. Given our longevity, we are well-known in the area, state, and region. Our favorite people often send us their friends and relatives.

Not long ago, we began using our Facebook page as a means of communication. We already have over 1500 followers and find this an effective way to keep followers apprised of our job openings.

What is your process? How long does it take?

We offer a free, pre-scheduled consultation.

We ask all families to fill out our online family application. This helps you to access your needs and guides us in our search. We then send you our Welcome Letter and Agency Agreement via Adobe Acrobat. Once you become a client family, we ask to have another conversation with you to go over the nuances of your job description. We also ask if we may speak with your partner/husband/wife if we haven’t already “met” him/her.

Next, we will send you files on select candidates and set up the first interview with those you choose to meet. Families most often meet in their homes, but some prefer to meet at a Starbuck’s or other public space. Once you identify a strong candidate or candidates, we set up a second interview so she/he can meet the whole family. The second interview can also be a paid trial day or two.

We have placed nannies & other domestics in 2 days, however, approximately two weeks is the norm. If a family is going to be traveling or the job is unusual, the search may take longer.

Once you are ready to make an offer, we will provide you with a sample/prototype 1-2 page family-employee agreement. HTN can assist you with the terms of salary and benefits if you like.

We also offer confidentiality agreements plus and an EIS for you and your new employee.

What is your trial period / guarantee?

Our guarantee is for 4 months or 120 days from the hiree’s start date.

What are your fees?

Our fees are delineated in our Agency Agreement, which we would be happy to send you via Adobe Acrobat.
